Kfir Gavrieli – On Heroism

Heroism is defined as showing concern for the
well-being of others, often against the wishes of fear. Heroism usually begins
in childhood, but it develops throughout an individual’s life. It’s a part of
being human and is often exhibited during daily activities and routines. Many
heroes go unnoticed and do not seek recognition for their heroic actions but do
so for the right reasons. Kfir Gavrieli asserts that heroes are ordinary people with an exceptional ability to
do extraordinary things.

Gavrieli explains that heroes are everywhere in
life, and that the term “hero” is overrated and rather akin to a
cliché term that has no real meaning in the real world. As such, to Gavrieli,
heroes are everyday people who do extraordinary things that help their
communities. When Kfir Gavrieli thinks of heroes, he recalls an
email he received from an Armenian woman who opened her basement for
humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees.

When he inquired what she had done, Gavrieli, Tieks
was pleasantly surprised to discover that she had opened up her basement to
accommodate several hundred of refugees. Gavrieli then reflected on all the
people he knew who risked their lives, and he called these people
“heroes” to himself. Heroes can be found in a flower shop in New York
that provides free service to individuals.

A hero is someone willing to take the risk of being
a role model for others. It can be someone who has always had a strong sense of
their community and its needs. It can be someone who chooses to be selfless and
takes a risk that may not always be successful but is meaningful and encourages
others to take a risk. It can be a woman who does things in her community she
never thought she was capable of doing. See related link for additional information.

Anytime anyone rises above their circumstances to
inspire someone else, it can be labeled as a hero,” said Gavrieli, Tieks “a hero is not always defined by their unique
status or skill set. Anybody who steps up in life, who puts others before
themselves, who may not possess the typical attributes of a superhero, can
still be considered a hero.
