Inside Dr. Andrew Jacono’s Decade of Advocacy Work
For nine consecutive years, Dr. Andrew Jacono chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual New York benefit supporting survivors of domestic violence. That sustained leadership role sits alongside a body of clinical and media work that has made him a recognizable advocate within the field of reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Andrew Jacono’s clinical contributions to this cause run deep. As senior advisor to the FACE TO FACE project, operated through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, he has personally performed facial reconstructions for more than 100 domestic violence survivors, offering pro bono care to patients who otherwise could not afford it.
From Local Recognition to National Television
The Center for the Women of New York honored his contributions in 2006 with a Good Guy Award, citing his advocacy and charitable surgical work. U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy went further, commending Dr. Jacono in the Congressional Record for his service to women’s welfare.
National television brought the work to a broader audience. Facing Trauma, a documentary series that debuted on Discovery Fit & Health in 2011 before moving to the Oprah Winfrey Network, followed Dr. Jacono as he performed reconstructive surgery for domestic violence survivors, capturing both the surgical process and the emotional weight of recovery.
A Cause That Travels With Him
The advocacy has not stayed confined to New York. Dr. Jacono’s international missions, which have reached more than 750 children in countries such as Ecuador, Thailand, and Vietnam, extend the same underlying philosophy: that surgical skill obligates a surgeon to serve people who cannot pay for it.
Nearly two decades after his first local award, Dr. Jacono’s advocacy work continues through his hospital appointments, his fellowship training program, and his ongoing involvement with organizations serving survivors of abuse, a commitment that has stayed remarkably consistent even as his international missions have grown in scale.
