Kelcy Warren Built a $90 Billion Pipeline Empire From Scratch

Kelcy Warren started Energy Transfer Partners in 1996 with co-founder Ray Davis, running a small intrastate natural gas pipeline operator out of East Texas. Warren has described those early years plainly. “When Ray Davis and I started at Energy Transfer, we floundered around, just paying salaries,” he says. The company’s fortunes shifted when Enron collapsed in 2001 and 2002, an event Kelcy Warren says “no one saw coming.” What followed was nearly three decades of acquisitions, pipeline conversions and expansion that carried a modest gas gatherer into the ranks of the largest energy infrastructure operators in the country.

From Salaries to Ninety Billion

The numbers trace the arc. Energy Transfer’s revenue climbed from one billion dollars in August 2003 to seventeen billion dollars in 2012, then to nearly ninety billion dollars at the close of 2022, a jump of roughly thirty three percent from the prior year alone. Kelcy Warren points to a string of deals as the engine behind that climb, including the 2004 purchase of Texas Utility Fuel Co in the Barnett Shale, the 2011 Southern Union acquisition, and the 2012 purchase of Sunoco, which gave the company a foothold in the Marcellus and diversified it beyond dry gas.

A Company Built on Timing

Kelcy Warren credits the people around him as much as the deals themselves. He frequently praises his management team, describing regular gatherings where employees swap stories and pitch ideas. Asked about the long run of favorable timing behind the Permian build out, Warren answered with a laugh, wondering aloud who could get that lucky. He insists luck was not the whole story. Energy Transfer now operates close to 125,000 miles of pipeline, moving roughly a third of the nation’s natural gas and crude oil, a scale Warren says grew from a habit of asking what the best purpose of a given pipe might be, rather than defaulting to trucks or rail.
