His counsel was rooted in a deep skepticism of transition narratives that have reshaped corporate energy policy at many major firms. “I would say don’t believe any of this nonsense that we’re transitioning out of energy,” Kelcy Warren said. “We’re not. That can’t happen, it’s impossible, but we are never going to run from the rhetoric. So I would say for young people, don’t buy off on that. You’re too smart.”

Built from the Ground Up

Kelcy Warren’s authority on energy markets comes from a career that spans more than four decades. He grew up in White Oak, Texas, the son of a man who worked pipeline jobs for Sun Pipeline, a company Warren’s Energy Transfer would later acquire. After earning a civil engineering degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978, Warren entered the industry at Lone Star Gas Company and worked his way through various midstream firms before co-founding Energy Transfer in the mid-1990s.

Today, Energy Transfer ranks among the largest midstream operators in the country. Its pipeline network covers more than 90,000 miles across 38 states and Canada. The company moves natural gas, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products and includes Sunoco LP within its broader portfolio. Its Gulf Coast terminal ling and storage operations are among the most extensive in the nation.
