Kelcy Warren sat down with Hart Energy in December 2023 fresh off an induction into the organization’s Hall of Fame, and the conversation quickly turned to something more personal than company milestones or industry forecasts. Kelcy Warren, the executive chairman and co-founder of Energy Transfer, said that transitioning out of energy is simply impossible for someone like him.

He also took time to acknowledge the other inductees in that year’s class, describing the honor as meaningful in large part because of the company it placed him in. Hart Energy’s Hall of Fame recognizes leaders who have made lasting contributions to the global energy sector.

Shaping the Midstream Landscape

Warren’s impact on U.S. energy infrastructure is difficult to overstate. When he and Ray Davis launched Energy Transfer in 1996, they were running a small intrastate natural gas pipeline in East Texas. Through targeted acquisitions, including the purchase of Sunoco in 2012 and the Enable Midstream deal in 2021, the company expanded into crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products.

Today, Energy Transfer operates approximately 140,000 miles of pipeline and moves roughly 30 percent of the country’s natural gas and petroleum. It is among the world’s top exporters of natural gas liquids, shipping to more than 90 countries. The company posted revenue of about $82 billion in 2024.

Warren’s personal reputation has been built alongside that growth. Kelcy Warren’s engineering background, acquired at the University of Texas at Arlington, informed a career-long instinct for infrastructure and the physical logic of moving energy from where it is produced to where it is needed.

He passed the CEO title to Mackie McCrea and Tom Long in January 2021 but has remained active as executive chairman. In the years since, he has continued to shape Energy Transfer’s direction while earning recognition from Hart Energy, the Gas Processors Association, and D CEO Magazine.
